Introduction to Nose Work:

 

Nose Work or Scent Work are terms to describe the canine scent detection activity developed for professional detection dogs and then brought to the civilian world. 

 

Dogs start by searching for a high value treat.  The treats are hidden in boxes at first. The challenge is increased every lesson by giving new scenarios for your dog to search for their treat.

 

This course will establish a solid foundation for your dog for searching and is geared to prepare those that want to move on to target odor training and ultimately enter competitions.  National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) and American Kennel Club (AKC) Scent Work are the most popular venues for competitions.  However, this course and all of Nose Work is about having fun with your dog. It is a game after all.  So even those that have no desire to compete with their dogs will learn how to engage and play Nose Work with their dogs.

All the dogs used in the videos in this course were brand new to nose work.  All of the videos were first takes.  The videos will show you the progression that occurs in each lesson to build a solid foundation for searching.   

 

Equipment:

 

You can use any box, bowl, or other open containers.  Save your Amazon boxes. Dollar Tree is a good source for containers. Make sure the box size is appropriate for the size of your dog.  Do not use too large/tall of a box.  The dog should easily be able to retrieve a piece of food from the bottom of the box without having the box edge hit them in the throat or have to climb into the box.  Do not use a box that is too small that the dog cannot get their muzzle into the box to retrieve the food reward.

 

The equipment you will need for the dog is:

 

Flat Collar or Martingale Collar or a harness with a back clip (not a no pull harness)

7-8 foot leash (length is a personal preference, you ultimately might want a longer leash)

Bait pouch

No prong collars, choke chains, gentle leaders, etc., while searching.   These restrict or punish your dog's movement and you want full freedom for the dog in Nose Work.
